A shopping list app which anticipates your needs
The Chefkoch Smartlist
Chefkoch is Europe’s largest cooking plattform, with more than 20 million unique users seeking inspiration every month. Chefkoch’s “why” is the belief that cooking for each other and enjoying meals together creates happiness. Its mission is to enable these moments of happiness at every stage of the cooking cycle. In 2018 Chefkoch decided to launch a product that would ease the process of shopping for ingredients. With a lot of shopping list apps already out there, the Chefkoch shopping list needed to be extremely easy to use and “smart”. When helping with repetitive tasks in every day life, the devil is in the details! Chefkoch turned to freiheit.com with the ambitious goal to launch a smart app within three months.
A nimble interdisciplinary team – consisting of software engineers, UX/UI designers and the product owner – worked together in every step of the process: benchmarking, building a working prototype within a month, conducting user testing, defining & prioritising the product roadmap and releasing an MVP for iOS and Android within three months.
Smartlist features included:
Machine learning built in - the app become smarter the more you use it
Fast and easy “add-to-list” input via voice control or “smart” suggest chips (enabling one-handed use)
“Smart sort” for easy check-off: organises list items into categories, while also taking the users typical store walkways into account
Recipe suggestions based on your shopping behaviour – the recipes’ ingredients can be easily added to lists
Apple watch and other mobile devices
Sychronization of shopping lists with family & friends
Offline mode
Chefkoch later decided to cooperate with Bring!, uniting the best of both apps. Hence, former Smartlist features can now be used inside the Bring! app.

Through machine learning the suggest chips become "smarter" over time, as the app gets to know the user.

The "add items to the list" mode feels like a messenger interface allowing one-handed touch gesture and voice control.

The "smart" suggest chips are filtered while the user is typing.

Smart chips also suggest quantities and attributes specific to the category.

Tapping on the "up" arrow puts the item (including quantities and attributes) on the shopping list.

An additional item can be added to the list. "Done" closes the input mode
